Istanbul’s two main airports sit on opposite sides of the city. How long does it take to reach each, and when should you book?
Istanbul has two major airports: Istanbul Airport (IST) in the north of the European side and Sabiha Gökçen Airport (SAW) on the Asian side. Which one you fly from changes your transfer plan entirely.
Istanbul Airport (IST)
Located in Arnavutköy, north of the city. Central European-side districts are usually 45–75 minutes away depending on traffic; the Asian side takes longer.
Sabiha Gökçen Airport (SAW)
Located in Pendik on the Asian side. It is closer to districts like Kadıköy and Ataşehir; reaching the European side depends on bridge traffic.
When should you book?
- Book at least 24 hours before your flight.
- For departures at peak times, plan to reach the airport 2.5–3 hours early.
- Share your flight number so pickup adjusts to any delay.
Why a private transfer?
Public transport with luggage is hard work and taxi fares change with traffic. With a private transfer the price is fixed, your driver meets you at arrivals and takes you straight to your door.
Based in Pendik, Özartur is minutes from Sabiha Gökçen and runs 24/7 transfers to Istanbul Airport too.
